Melody Compton & Ruby Aspinall – Duet Opera singing & Harp 

A duet of London-based classically trained soprano, Melody Compton, and Principal Harp player of the Chineke! Orchestra, Ruby Aspinall. 

 

About Melody Compton 

Melody Compton is a London-based classically trained soprano of Guyanese and Carriacouan heritage. She is a graduate of The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where she studied with Marilyn Rees and Lyn Davies. She also subsequently took part in the Classical Opera Company course and performed scenes from Manon Lescaut in the lead role. Melody was a member of the amateur BBC choir, where she sang solo and choral parts in a production of Brahms’ German Requiem under the baton of Tom Service and Ashley Wass.

Melody has performed works in concert by Rachmaninoff, Wolf, Strauss, Gershwin, Puccini, M. Williams, and R. Rodgers. Melody participating in the first Pegasus Opera Company Mentorship Programma in 2020, studying with Alison Buchanan, and took part in a master class with Sir Willard White.  Most recently, Melody has performed in ‘The Story of Claudia Jones’ in 2021 and ‘The Story of John Archer’ in 2022 for the Black Heroes Foundation. She also appeared in Pegasus Opera Company’s production of ‘Aspern Papers’ in 2022.

 

About Ruby Aspinall

Ruby Aspinall is Principal Harp of the Orchestra, Chineke! Orchestra, a position she has held since the group’s inception in 2015. Highlights include performing as a soloist at the BBC Proms (Prom 34) ; with VOCES 8, Ola Gjeilo & The Carducci Quartet for their debut Mindful Mix Prom. This season with Chineke! Orchestra (Prom 61); the UK premiere 7 O’Clock Shout by Valerie Coleman & previously the world premier of The Spark Catchers by Hannah Kendall. Orchestras that Ruby has played with include; BBC Concert Orchestra, English National Ballet, English National Opera, Birmingham Royal Ballet and she continues to enjoy playing at the major concert venues in London. Recordings include; Max Richter’s ‘Four Seasons Reimagined’ with soloist Elena Urioste on Deutsche Grammophon. A UK & German tour is planned culminating in a concert at Queen Elizabeth Hall on the 8th June 2024.

As a versatile musician, Ruby has also recorded on film tracks such as ; Wakanda Forever by Ludwig Göransson , & Queen Charlotte A Bridgerton Story with singer Alicia Keys. The hit Netflix show Bridgerton also features Ruby playing solo harp. For filming, an Erard Gothic harp was provided plus 19c style costume complete with corset. Ruby trained with Harp Professors, Charlotte Seale as a Leverhulme Scholar at The Purcell School Of Music and graduated with the Harp Professors Sioned Williams, Gabriella Dal’Ollio and Imogen Barford at Trinity College Of Music.

Ruby was proud to give her debut Harp Masterclass earlier this year at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.
