Third Coast Percussion

September 21, 2019 @ 8:00 pm

£20.00

Hard-grooving ensemble Third Coast Percussion perform new works by two musical visionaries – iconic minimalist composer Philip Glass, and pop polymath Devonté Hynes (Blood Orange).

Perpetulum is Glass’s first ever work for percussion ensemble, a thrum of malleted percussion, wood blocks, tambourine, snare and bass drum. Written specifically for Third Coast Percussion, the piece features a cadenza created by the performers themselves. That spirit of group creation is echoed in Devonté Hynes’s piece, which Hynes produced with the ensemble, allowing them to orchestrate his musical content, creating a rich, texture-driven work. These pieces are joined by works by Steve Reich, Gavin Bryars and David Skidmore.

Third Coast Percussion have a strong draw to collaborative work, and in recent years have worked with Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche, commissioned ten composers through their Emerging Composers Partnership, as well as producing new work as a group, as on their 2017 album Paddle to the Sea.
