Electric guitar
Most of us have watched a rock guitarist screaming through a solo and thought ‘how does he or she do that?’. The answer? The same as you. They start at the beginning, learn the techniques, practise them and keep their skills sharp!
Like the acoustic guitar, you have a plectrum, although it’s mostly used in a slightly different way to bring out just one note at a time – though you’ll learn to strum as well.
It’s really useful to learn the skills of Spanish and acoustic guitar as well – after all, the more techniques you have, the more you can do with it!
It’s hard to know where to start in looking for videos and recordings of great guitarists – there are so many, and so many different styles! For some more unusual styles, try Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Pat Metheny… and don’t miss Jimi Hendrix, who played his guitar left handed and upside down!
We teach the guitar in schools across the borough and at Newham Music Academy our after-school and Saturday music centre.
