More to the River Than Meets the Eye

Women take a tea break from their job at the gasworks on Cody Docks.

Pupils from Star Primary explored the history of nearby Cody Docks including stories about the women who worked on the Docks during World Wars 1 and 2. The harsh conditions of working on the dock did not match the usual idea of acceptable work for women. But these women became a vital and effective part of the Gas Light and Coke Company’s workforce and helped ensure Londoners had a continued supply of gas to their homes throughout the wars.
