You Called, We Came

14 May 2024

You Called, We Came is a Newham Music and Vital Arts project celebrating the Windrush Generation and their positive impact on London and the NHS.

Inspired by Newham Music’s Windrush 75 learning resource, local school choirs, Newham Hospital Staff Choir, and Newham Music’s Junior Repz Choir learned songs including London is the Place for Me by Windrush passenger Lord Kitchener, Jamaican folk song Dis Long Time Gal, and You Called, We Came – a song about the experience of coming to England in 1948 to rebuild the NHS.

Vital Arts organised a series of workshops for children on the Rainbow Ward at Newham Hospital, led by Newham Music vocal teachers. The project also helped to relaunch Newham Hospital’s staff choir.

The project culminated in a performances at Newham Hospital on 17 June and at Newham Council’s Windrush Day event on 22 June 2024 at East Ham Town Hall.
